"Folks in Alabama sound like they sorely regret passing the nation's most oppressive immigration law. Local businesses have lost their customers, farmers have lost their workers, schools have lost their students. Now that every interaction with a government agency requires proving your citizenship, Alabama's got lines out the courthouse door (see pic). You can't get a dog tag without showing you belong.
On top of that, national labor groups are coming in, taking notes and promising to help get the Alabama law overturned. Also, a new generation of Freedom Riders is getting arrested in Alabamans' streets and demanding answers in their lawmaker' offices (video above). The local papers reprinted this partial list of Dream Activists arrested:
Martin Unzueta, 55, of Chicago; Belen Rebelledo, 39, of Detroit; Alma Diaz, 30, of Ohio; Jaime Guzman, 25, of Oregon; Catalina Rios, 19, of Detroit; Ernesto Zumaya, 25, of Los Angeles; Myasha Arellano, 18, of San Fernando Valley, Calif.; Krsna Avila, 23, of Oakland, Calif.; Fernanda Marroquin, 22, of Philadelphia; Cesar Marroquin, 21, of Philadelphia; and Cynthia Perez, 27, of Indianapolis, IN.
And on top of all that, the federal Justice Department is investigating whether the state is committing civil rights violations as it enforces the statute. Depending on which Alabama Republicans you listen to it, the whole mess is enough to make you think this law is heading for a few changes."

Its really all of a piece. Now, as you will see if you watch Food Inc. Meat packing companies pick up busloads of workers from Mexico. Presumably this is now common in construction as well. This is one of those wonderful benefits that come from union busting. You can fatten your bottom line by using undocumented immigrants.
Not to stray too far from the subject, but do you all remember when Bush the Younger tried to privatize port security? Instead of using the coast guard, do you remember who he tried to contract out the work to? Dubai Port World.
Who says privatizing public union jobs will employ Americans?
I'm not hating on immigrants. My great grandfather was Mexican. I agree with Mouzer that they contribute far more than they are given credit for:

"Ok just to clarify here undocumented citizens or illegal citizens do not receive government assistance besides what would be considered general government services (such as the public roadway system). What we generally consider to be welfare programs- such as WIC and food stamps- do NOT go to undocumented or illegal citizens. Beyond that all undocumented and illegal citizens pay taxes in the United States. They pay payroll tax, social security tax, medicare tax, shipping taxes, gas taxes, grocery taxes, state taxes, etc. To state that there are illegal citizens who come to the US and then mooch off the system w/o paying back in to the system shows gross incompetence about how taxation and government assistance programs work. The majority of people who are here illegally, in fact, have been huge contributors to social security and medicare and yet they have never been able to take out the SS/medicare benefits they paid in to."

Lady Liberty lifts her lamp for them no less than all of the other immigrants who found refuge on our shores.
My grievance is with these vaunted "job creators" who employ factory workers overseas; and who, here in America, fill  what had once been union positions that secured retirement, paid good wages, and benefits with immigrants who are paid substandard wages and no benefits at all. And it is to these BASTARDS that tax cuts are given!

[Deep breath. Sigh.]

Its all of a piece. Its all one stinking corrupt mass.
Alabama reaps the harvest of their hardheartedness as will anyone who follows in their footsteps as Alabama followed Georgia who followed Arizona. How's that Show Me Your Papers Please/Don't Let the Sun Set On Your Illegal Immigrant Ass law working out for you all? Begging your pardon John, and all the others in Alabama, Georgia and Arizona who voted against the anti-immigrant measure.

And here's the glorious truth. None of it works. Not Reaganomics, not supply-side economics, not tax cuts for the wealthy, not social safety net slashing, no deregulation of any stripe, not union-busting, not illegal alien-bashing, NONE OF IT! All it boils down to is destroying America to get YOU, the 1%,  a bigger piece of the pie!

Christ himself had harsh words for that kind of thinking.
"What does it profit a man to gain the world if it costs him his soul?
Easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter Heaven?"
And somebody please tell me how someone can call themselves an advocate of Ayn Rand AND a Christ?

Here's a joke that just occurred to me:
The Good Samaritan as Told By Ayn Rand.
A Samaritan came upon a man who had been beaten by robbers. So he kicked him in the head and took everything he had left.
Funny Innit?
